Thriller Analysis: Dream House

Thriller films are a genre that never seems to fail in getting the audience at the grip of their seats. It is a movie genre that uses suspense tension and excitement as the main elements. In a thriller genre film often the narrative will centre around a crime, that usually revolves around a serial killer or the loose which is always the main character. Thriller films try to convey a lot of action in order to 'thrill' their audience, ironically the word 'thrill' is at the word thriller so the genre itself gives a message of what it try's to do.

The film I'am going to write about is the 2011 psychological thriller called the Dream House.

                                                               Genre;
                                                               Psychological Thriller

                                                               Cast's Starring;
                                                               Daniel Graig
                                                               Rachel Weisz
                                                               Naomi Watts
                                                               Marton Csokas

                                                               Storyline;
Dream House tells the story of a successful publisher who quits his job in New York City to relocate his wife (Weisz) and two daughters to his abandoned old house in a quaint New England town. It is unsafe but the family still live there happily. As they settle into their new life they discover their 'perfect home' was the murder scene of a mother and her two children. The entire city believes it was at the hands of the husband who survived. When Will (Graig) investigates the tragedy his only lead comes from a neighbor (Watts) who was close to the family that died. As will and Ann the neighbour piece together the disturbing puzzle they discover that the story of the last man to leave Will's dream house will be just as horrifying to the one who came next.

The film begins with the very important Distribution title Universal Pictures and is then followed by the film's  Production title Morgan Creek. Next the film title appears at the centre of the screen in white lettering. The movie has already given the audience a clue of where the film is set as a building is shown which suggests that it is set in a city as you would never see buildings in a town or any rural areas. During all this footage in the beginning of the opening no talking is actually going on just the sound of the music soundtrack in the background until the audience then sees Will in his workplace and he has a quick conversation with one man. Instantly you could tell by his facial expression that he is not happy with where he is settled and wants to move elsewhere.

One thing different about this film that I pointed out was that during the opening the actors names and the director etc was not included at the start of a title sequence and with other films that usually is the first thing you see. Other than that I do particularly enjoy this film and it is also a psychological thriller film that makes it different as thriller films are more common so this was a interesting and exciting challenge.

Dream House was released on September 30th 2011 in the United States and Canada by Universal Pictures and Morgan Creek Studios. It was directed by Jim Sheridan and produced by Jim Sheridan James G. Robinson David Robinson Daniel Bobker and Ehren Kruger and written by David Loucka. It's Box Office release was 38,502,340.
