When we fist filme scenes of our film opening we didn't use any elements of lighting. When watching back our different shots we found that it was out out of focus which also showed darkness, which also made it unclear to the audience what points of action was occurring. However when filming these shots again, us as a group found that the second shots worked much better with added lighting as not only was it clear to the audience what was going on it also created an atmosphere of darkness and depression which also conveyed the main character and mise en scene used to portray her stress. I also think that the use of lighting focused onto the character which also made it visible to the audience her emotions.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

 A media institution is an established organisation that deals in creation and distribution of advertising and entertainment. The kind of media institution that would distribute our media product would be independent as our film opening showed little use of technology compared to major film companies as major film companies use a range of high tec cameras and equipment to produce their movies. As major film companies such as 20th century fox and sony have an higher budget than independent film companies so they can use a range of different cameras such as simul camera, virtual camera system, 3D fusion camera, virtual images and many more. However independent films such as Paranormal activity 1 was distributed by a film festival called screamfest horror film festival in 2007. This is similar for us as our movie was showed at a movie screening in Angel called 'The screen on Green'. Hoever Paranormal Activity was then distributed by paramount pictures. Paranormal activity 1 was an independent movie as a low budget of $15,000 to create the movie also only one JVC camera was used to create this movie, also unknown actors starred in this movie without a script. Our media product is similar to a independent movie as our camera and editing was showed to be basic.

However we used City and Islington college to show the audience the production company.

Distribution companies: News corporation.

News corporation is an American multi conglomerate headquartered in New york. News corporation own hundreds of media companies such as sky, 21st century fox, fox news, wall street journey, star tv ect. It is the worlds second largest media conglomerate which was created in 1979 which is founded and owned by Rupert Murdouch.

If we was to distribute our film independently there would be many advantages and disadvantages. Advantages would be that the movie would be able to stay in the cinemas longer and possibly able to become a franchise if it became popular. However the disadvantages are it may have a low movie rating which would lead to the movie being unsuccessful is it doesn't get enough views. On the other hand the advantage and disadvantages of being distributed from a major film company are that the advantages are that we could make more movies and the producer would get recognised and people would choose to watch the movie. Disadvantages are if the movie is unsuccessful we would loose out on a lot of money and people may not watch the producers/studios movies if it doesn't meet their standards.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?


All media productions represents different representations for each social groups. Representations are created from the gender, age, sexuality, regional identity, ability/disability, class &status and ethnicity of a person. Representations also lead to sterotypes of a person. Sterotypes are created from people within the society.
For example:
A middle aged white man in a suit would be seen as a rich business man.

A young sexy, dumb, blonde female would be considered as a secretary.

In our film openings the social groups it represented was single mothers as our film opening portrayed a single mother dealing with depression from the loss of her daughter. This is shown through our choice of mise en scene of the cigarette and wine. We portrayed single mothers in a good way as we showed single mothers in a good way as we showed single mothers being strong and coping with life changing experiences which many single parents face the loss of their child and dealing with the pain and the pressure alone. However we also portrayed single mothers in a negative way with the use of smoking and drinking alcohol which suggested a sense of irresponsibility and lack of good mother hood.

·      In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Real media productions convey the use of camera such as track, pan, tilt and the use of a range of different camera shots such as long shots, close ups, medium close up, extreme close up, wide shot, over the shoulder shot, cut in e.c.t. To portray real media productions in our film opening we used a range of shots. In our film opening we decided to use different camera shots to make our film opening more interesting. Here's an example of some of the camera shots we used in our film opening:

For a film to work there has to be a clear theme or genre in order for the film to work. Themes are also used to attract a certain age of people who would be most suitable audience to enjoy and view the film. The theme of our film opening was supernatural thriller, the audience which our film would be most suitable for is older people as the story line of our film opening would apply aspects of sadness. However i think that the age of certificate for our film would be 15+ as there wouldn't be any elements of any gory violence or death just concerning supernatural elements.

Also in real media productions they use a variety of mise en scene to convey and support the elements needed to support their wanted genre and theme,  this is achieved from a range of different costume, make up, different locations, body language and props. Below is the choice of our chosen mise en scene and why:

Above is our chosen main location to film our film opening. our chosen location was St Mary's church in upper street. We chose to film here as we found that this location supported our film opening as we found the location  spooky because of the shapes of the trees and the gaves. 

The second location we chose to do our filming was in a house as we wanted to portray the grieving mother separately from her 'dead daughter' we did this as we didn't want to confuse the audience with portraying the same location for every shot. We also did this because we wanted to cross cut between the mother and the daughter. When filming here we used lighting equipment to create a dark and depressing atmosphere.

Costume which was needed for our film opening was a white dress and blood on it . We decided to create this costume as we wanted to show to the audience that the little girl has been murdered and was dead. We had to create this costume with the use of fake pre-made blood which was made and applied before filming.

was shown to be stressed and upset through her body language.
This is shown from her body language such as putting her head down
with her hands on her head to show her stress and to show the
pain she is feeling.



 In real life media productions they also follow tittle of film openings. We included various different film tittles. However we didn't successful manage to achieve the correct order of title sequences as we failed to include all titles needed.

This is the blood stained dress that was put on by Sasha's sister who played being Sashas daughter. This dress was worn by her which will be seen in our opening scene. =) soon to be prevailed

Props for Affliction of Memory

This is a picture of tea which was used to create an effect of ageing pictures where we used the tea bag to rub some tea staines onto the pictures.

These are the images we used which was photocopied and then we used the tea bags to rub some tea onto the pictures to give it the effect of an old fading picture. 

This is the final result of the images being stained with the tea which resulted in having the old fading effect which then was cut out and used in our opening scene. :) 

When filming our opening:

Before filming half of our film opening in St Mary church we had to create the costume of the bloody white top. We did this by appplying an already made blood mixture which was made by Nhadia. We had to apply to the plain white top, we had to apply enough blood in order to make the blood look believable as if the little girl has been murdered.

Above is us applying the "blood mixture" on to the top. This was a messy part of us preparing our mise en scene as the blood got everywhere.  After when applying enough blood to the top we had to wait around for 15-20 as we had to wait for the blood to dry. We also applied blood onto the little girls hands.

Part 2 of our filming was done in Nhadia's aunty house, our filming took place in the living room corner. The props we used for this was wine bottle and glass, ashtray and cigarette, old photos. We choose to use these props as we thought that these props was sinister for the mother to make her character look stressed and depressed.

Filming Photos

After filming for our opening sequence Affliction of Memory, Nhadia and Sasha went back to St Mary's Church in upper street islington to film some more scenes needed for our final production. The images show the same specific places that we originally shot some of our scenes.

This is a image of Nhadia filming Sasha's footage of one particular scene. She is looking closely to the camera to see if the framing and checking if the footage appears out of focus.

This image shows Sasha adjusting the camera properly so that it is even with the stand as we want  our scenes to be still and not unbalanced. 

This image is a shot taken by Nhadia of Sasha after filming. 

This image is of Sasha stood still to see the reaction of the character which relates to the last scene where she thinks her daughter (sister) is still alive however it is in her mind that her daughter is still around. She sees her daughter although it is her imagining her. 

This is an image of the trees that Sasha's daughter (sister) stands by where Sasha sees her but when she turns back she is no where to be seen. 

This is an image of another tree where we previously shot are scenes at. We previously covered fake blood over it to make the scene look more frantic and spooky. 

This is a brief image of the park itself in St Mary's Church. 

This is an image of blocks of flats behind the park and we shot a few scenes here of Sasha's daughter (sister) walking towards the camera.

The final image is showing the back of the church. 

Affliction of memory rough cut

This is the rough cut of our opening scene Affliction of memory. We shot our opening scene at two specific locations; A park at St Mary's Church in Upper Street, Islington and inside a house in Bethnal Green, East London. We were filming for two days a Saturday and a Monday in the half term including a week day in college to re shot the indoor scenes as they were out of focus and dark.
Day 1 of our shooting started at 2 in the afternoon of Saturday and we finished at half 3. At that time the weather was really cold due to the snow happening a week before. There was still some snow in the ground so because of that a few of our scenes had snow in the background but other than that we had no trouble filming despite the freezing cold weather.
Day 2 of our shooting started at the same time on Monday but this time it took longer for us to shot as the location was quite far and we had many more scenes to do that was required. In terms of the weather it did not concern us as much because we were shooting indoors but the weather was much better than Saturday. However we did have troubles with our lighting. Some scenes shot were too dark and out of focus so during the week when we returned back to school we re shot some of those scenes. That decision to re shot was good as it was an improved and a learning curve for us.

Practising with the camera:

Before filming our real opening Nhadia and Sasha went to St Mary's church in upper street, Islington to practice filming our required shots needed for our final production. When we was at St mary church we thought about specific places in the park where we will eventually shoot our different scenes.

The first shot we took was a long shot of Nhadia walking through the park, with her back towards the camera. This would make the audience question who character is as their facial features are not revealed.

This shot is a medium close up of Nhadia walking around the tree and brushing her hand around the tree. This still causes suspense as you still can't see the character face.

This shot is a close up of Nhadia feet when walking towards the camera. The closer Nhadia got the camera showed her clothing this would effective when filming as the use of costume of the white bloody dress would be seen.

This shot is a long shot of Nhadia walking towards the camera slowly. This is the first time we get to see a bit of the characters identity which builds up suspense.

This shot shows a close up of the main characters face. When editing we will use special effects to make it look more scary.

The final shot we filmed was an over the shoulder shot. When we film the real thing we will shoot this scene twice once with the little girl in the background and one without so when editing we can edit it to make it look like the girl is not really there.






Sasha: "By doing this i learnt how to use the camera better so when it comes to filming our scenes, I feel more confident and that i will be able to successfully film these scenes."

Title ideas and title sequence order

When coming up with ideas for the way we want our title sequence to run, we decided that we will have it in this order:

The type font we were going for wasn't the cliche font everyone associates with thriller movies because we didn't see that as professional. Instead we decided on 'Lithos Pro regular' with black colour font for the normal titles and dark red for the subtitles eg: "in association with" and the main tittle "Affliction of memory. We didn't want to make our title sequence too complicated so we decided on going for a fade in and out effect which is the most simple one.
