Evaluation: Question 7
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
Evaluation: Question 6
What have you learned about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
For the process of making, building and constructing this product we used final cut pro to edit our opening, sound track pro to add sound to our opening, a JVC GY/ H100 Camera with a tripod to film our opening and an alternative camera which had light activated and a stand. We used this camera for our house scenes to gain some light.
Here are the Images below:
We were provided with these technologies and it was our responsibility to use it effectively. Effectively in a way that it will make our film opening feel and look like something you would see in a high budget film. Going back to the health and safety task, we learned the process of how to use the camera and tripod properly so it was our duty to learn from these skills and do well with our camera angles.
A good example is our introduction to where the little girl starts walking. She is walking away from the camera and this is a good intro as it builds up suspense and tension. We have also started with a long shot which is better than the common shot of a close up shot to start with.
We also used final cut pro to edit our film together, cutting out the bits that were not necessary, putting ins and outs to our film to make it flow and mainly to lengthen the film correctly. We did not want it to be too long likewise we did not want it to be too short.
Sound track pro was used to add music to the film. Music plays an important part in the beginning of film openings. It gets the audience's attention and we wanted to do that with our choice of music.
To make certain scenes in our film lighter we used minimum lightning to not focus on the surrounding, just to focus on our character as that is what psychological thrillers are all about. We also wanted those specific scenes to spook the audience. A few examples are below.
To make title sequences we needed to use final cut pro. We managed to include mostly all the title sequences in films, however we did miss a few. An example is below.

EVALUATION: Question 4
Who would be the audience for my media product?
Our target audience for our thriller opening is suited for everybody, a mixed genre, boys and girls but with a range of ages, generally the ages of young people from age 16-25. The type of audience we would want to attract for our thriller opening are people who enjoy watching supernatural thrillers as our film contained many aspects of supernatural like the use of blood and the location. We also want people that like psychological films and thriller films in general.
A second target audience that we would like to attract is single mothers. Our whole storyline is based on a single parent coping over the loss of her daughter. To grab that kind of audience would be excellent for us because it means that we have reached out a new type of audience and hopefully our film opening is relatable for them and our single mother was convincing enough to portray a single parent in reality.
Here is a review on two guys talking about the film 'The silent house' a psycholgical thriller released in 2012. This example is great in identifying what type of audiences watch psychological thrillers and from looking at this example we have a clear idea on who would be watching our opening.
Here is another review, this time on a girl talking on her opinion about the film 'The Silent House'. Looking at this example again tells us the type of audience that watches psycholgical thrillers.

Here is my example of the target audience for our thriller opening.
Her name is Dezree, 19 years old. She is in her first year of university. In uni she does Fashion and film studies. Dezree loves reading books especially supernatural books. Her most recent purchase is Stephanie Meyer's Twilight. Her hobbies include dancing, singing and travelling over the summer holidays. In her spare time she prefers going to the cinema with friends and would watch only thriller, psychological, supernatural or horror movies. She is very passionate in fashion and classifies urban outfitters, bershka, new look and topshop as her main places to shop. Dezree also loves vintage clothing and shops in stores around camden where she would find a bargain of vintage clothing.
EVALUATION Question 3

EVALUATION: Question 2
How does your media product represent particular social groups?
Representation:
This shot has similarities and differences between them as we wanted our character to be mysterious, freaky yet innocent. Both characters have fixed expressions to show something about the character, what they are hiding and how they are feeling. The shot of the orphan child however has a more stern serious look whereas the shot of the child in our film has a more calmer look and there is a hint of a smile there. With the Orphan child you can get the impression that she is slightly evil but with our child you get a sense of innocence.
These shots have similarities in terms of mise en scene. Both characters are wearing white clothing though our character has blood stain on their outfit. They are both also standing in the same position, behind another individual. The body language of the orphan child shows that she is about to do something evil and the way she is looking at the child sleeping suggests that something she is about to do is not right. our character is standing behind her mother. Her body language is just relaxed and confident as if she wants her mother to turn around to see her. There is no source of evilness through this image. The only difference with these two shots is the setting scene. Our scene is set in the park and both characters are standing beside trees and it is clear the setting scene in the orphan is the bedroom.
In terms of the single mother, our choice of props such as the use of cigarettes and alcohol has portrayed single mothers negatively. It shows the single mother having no control and being vulnerable. We did shots of the single mother smoking, drinking and looking stressed. On a positive side this is something people would see on their screens. I think we represented her in reality of any parent deeply upset over their dead child.
Representation:
- Refers to the construction in any medium
- Includes aspects of reality such as people, writing, objects or events
- Representations may be in speech or writing
- Representations refers to the key markets of identity eg. Class, age, gender and ethnicity
In our thriller 'Affliction of Memory' we have gone under the representation of color by using a sepia effect.
We have turned these normal shots into old looking ones which relate to our thriller. Parts which doesn't have a sepia effect is the scenes only by the mother.
Social groups has been defined as two or more people sharing some social relation. These people share some similiar characteristics. These members of people are considered as a unit.
Our group has limited variation in terms of social representation in our film. We only had two social groups, a single mother and a child being represented.
Our first social group, the child was slightly influenced by the girl in the movie 'The orphan'. In Orphan the film is perversed in representing the girl as evil however we wanted ours to be represented as freaky yet innocent. Because she is a dead child we also wanted her to have a hidden identity.

EVALUATION: Question 1
Brief Intro:
Our media project called Affliction Of Memory is an opening scene that consists of two main characters that our audience is focusing at, a mother and a child. Our main message that we were trying to address is on a fragile single mum grieving over the loss over her young dead child. A film solely based on a single parent is hardly something you see a lot though it is something that happens on a day to day basis as there are many single parent households. For our film we also focused on the number of emotions the mother had because of her child. You get to see a few emotions of her stressed, emotional, distraught, frustrated and imaginable. Imaginable because at the end of the opening she turns round and appears to believe her daughter is behind her however it is purely just in her imagination. The theme for our thriller opening is a psychological thriller as the storyline generally focuses on the attitudes towards our characters.
Q1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
The familiar and predictable forms and techniques used by the media to communicate certain ideas or to convey a desired impression is what is defined as conventions. Technical codes include camera angles and sound. Our opening has those technical codes and we also have a few common conventions that is recognisable. Our opening consists of four different elements of conventions that is always present in film openings. These four examples are the use of camera work, Mise en scene, sound and editing.
To portray real media productions in our film opening we used a range of different camera shots such as medium shots, close up shots, over the shoulder shots and long shots. We done this because we wanted to make our film to have a variety of things. We knew camera shots was important because it it is the main thing we are being assessed on. Also we wanted to show an improvement from our last filming task to show that we have gradually improved our camera skills.
Here are examples of the different camera shots in our film opening:
Our opening also has other conventions such as the use of title sequences.
Our sound was taken from sound track pro and we kept it minimum as sound can be distracting. The church bell sound was taken from foley sounds and we created our own soundtrack by merging and mixing it together again provided by soundtrack pro. For evaluating our sound, i believe it is very intense and builds up tension. Lastly the edits we used was a fade in out effect and title credits.

-Medium Close up. This focuses on an individual and you can see the body language of the person and its facial expression. - Over the shoulder shot |
Other real media productions used in our film opening is Mise en scene. We didn't use much Mise en scene as our storyline was simple yet interesting also however we did use mostly props. An example of the use of mise en scene for our opening are here; it shows our setting location and there are a few images of what was in the park like the graveyard and the fountain: |
This image here is St. Mary's Church, our main filming location where we spend most of our time shooting. |
We had props like the costume of the white dress on the girl, old photos of the girl. cigarettes, an astray and a bottle of wine with the wine glass for the mother. Fake blood was also used on the dead girl's dress.
An example of the use of props are here:

Props for Affliction of Memory
This is a picture of tea which was used to create an effect of ageing pictures where we used the tea bag to rub some tea staines onto the pictures.
These are the images we used which was photocopied and then we used the tea bags to rub some tea onto the pictures to give it the effect of an old fading picture.
This is the final result of the images being stained with the tea which resulted in having the old fading effect which then was cut out and used in our opening scene. :)

When filming our opening:
Before filming half of our film opening in St Mary church we had to create the costume of the bloody white top. We did this by appplying an already made blood mixture which was made by Nhadia. We had to apply to the plain white top, we had to apply enough blood in order to make the blood look believable as if the little girl has been murdered.
Above is us applying the "blood mixture" on to the top. This was a messy part of us preparing our mise en scene as the blood got everywhere. After when applying enough blood to the top we had to wait around for 15-20 as we had to wait for the blood to dry. We also applied blood onto the little girls hands.
Part 2 of our filming was done in Nhadia's aunty house, our filming took place in the living room corner. The props we used for this was wine bottle and glass, ashtray and cigarette, old photos. We choose to use these props as we thought that these props was sinister for the mother to make her character look stressed and depressed.
