Evaluation of our film opening: Question 6

EVALUATION COMPLETE

I have completed all my evaluations! :)

EVALUATION:Q7

LOOKING BACK AT YOUR PRELIMINARY TASK, WHAT DO YOU FEEL YOU HAVE LEARNT IN THE PROGRESSION FROM IT TO THE FULL PRODUCT

EVALUATION: Q6

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT ABOUT TECHNOLOGIES FROM THE PROCESS OF CONSTRUCTING THIS PRODUCT?

In the process of constructing this product i have used final cut pro, soundtrack pro a JVC GY/ H100 camera, a tripod and a camera light stand.

i have used all these combinations of technology to make my opening scene a  constructive film where it would look and feel like a high budget film where the lighting and how the camera angles are angled at the actress would look professional and the sound would make the film feel alive.  Firstly i have used the camera angles that i have learnt to give the film an emphasis and more of a flow instead of one camera angle like a close up making the film feel stiff and unflowable. for example

This is a long shot we wanted this angle because we wanted a shot of the character walking way from the camera where she would suddenly disappear.

secondly i used final cut pro to edit the film together to make it flow and look realistic. for example

Thirdly i used sound track pro to add music to the film and give it that edge of thriller and sense of tension in the film. for example,

i also used the lighting to make certain scenes in the film brighter where we only needed a tiny bit of light to make it scary and show the emotions on the characters face, for example,

i also used the editing on the final cut pro to make a title sequence. for example

and finally i edited scenes to make them look dreamy for example i used sepia for certain scenes where the dead little girl would come onto the camera,

Evaluation: Question 6

What have you learned about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

For the process of making, building and constructing this product we used final cut pro to edit our opening, sound track pro to add sound to our opening, a JVC GY/ H100 Camera with a tripod to film our opening and an alternative camera which had light activated and a stand. We used this camera for our house scenes to gain some light.

Here are the Images below:

We were provided with these technologies and it was our responsibility to use it effectively. Effectively in a way that it will make our film opening feel and look like something you would see in a high budget film. Going back to the health and safety task, we learned the process of how to use the camera and tripod properly so it was our duty to learn from these skills and do well with our camera angles.
A good example is our introduction to where the little girl starts walking. She is walking away from the camera and this is a good intro as it builds up suspense and tension. We have also started with a long shot which is better than the common shot of a close up shot to start with.

We also used final cut pro to edit our film together, cutting out the bits that were not necessary, putting ins and outs to our film to make it flow and mainly to lengthen the film correctly. We did not want it to be too long likewise we did not want it to be too short.

Sound track pro was used to add music to the film. Music plays an important part in the beginning of film openings. It gets the audience's attention and we wanted to do that with our choice of music.

To make certain scenes in our film lighter we used minimum lightning to not focus on the surrounding, just to focus on our character as that is what psychological thrillers are all about. We also wanted those specific scenes to spook the audience. A few examples are below.

To make title sequences we needed to use final cut pro. We managed to include mostly all the title sequences in films, however we did miss a few. An example is below.

EVALUATION: Q4

EVALUATION: Question 4

Who would be the audience for my media product?

Our target audience for our thriller opening is suited for everybody, a mixed genre, boys and girls but with a range of ages, generally the ages of young people from age 16-25. The type of audience we would want to attract for our thriller opening are people who enjoy watching supernatural thrillers as our film contained many aspects of supernatural like the use of blood and the location. We also want people that like psychological films and thriller films in general.

A second target audience that we would like to attract is single mothers. Our whole storyline is based on a single parent coping over the loss of her daughter. To grab that kind of audience would be excellent for us because it means that we have reached out a new type of audience and hopefully our film opening is relatable for them and our single mother was convincing enough to portray a single parent in reality.

Here is a review on two guys talking about the film 'The silent house' a psycholgical thriller released in 2012. This example is great in identifying what type of audiences watch psychological thrillers and from looking at this example we have a clear idea on who would be watching our opening.

Here is another review, this time on a girl talking on her opinion about the film 'The Silent House'. Looking at this example again tells us the type of audience that watches psycholgical thrillers.

Here is my example of the target audience for our thriller opening.
Her name is Dezree, 19 years old. She is in her first year of university. In uni she does Fashion and film studies. Dezree loves reading books especially supernatural books. Her most recent purchase is Stephanie Meyer's Twilight. Her hobbies include dancing, singing and travelling over the summer holidays. In her spare time she prefers going to the cinema with friends and would watch only thriller, psychological, supernatural or horror movies. She is very passionate in fashion and classifies urban outfitters, bershka, new look and topshop as her main places to shop. Dezree also loves vintage clothing and shops in stores around camden where she would find a bargain of vintage clothing.

EVALUATION.6

This video shows some of the technologies used throughout the process of filming our title sequence. We used Final Cut Pro for all things editing and Soundtrack pro for making our sound. At first this was quite difficult as we all as a group weren't as advanced in using any of these mac applications but with time i think we improved in our skills.

What I learnt from using these technologies is that you have to gain experience in using it first before you try constructing a project. Gaining experience only helps when you make mistakes. I think that as a grou we tried our best in using all types of transitions to make our sequence flow better but also try to have a variety.

EVALUATION: Q3

WHAT KIND OF MEDIA INSTITUTION MIGH DISTRIBUTE YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT AND WHY?

Evaluation of our film opening: Question 5

Before

After

When we fist filme scenes of our film opening we didn't use any elements of lighting. When watching back our different shots we found that it was out out of focus which also showed darkness, which also made it unclear to the audience what points of action was occurring. However when filming these shots again, us as a group found that the second shots worked much better with added lighting as not only was it clear to the audience what was going on it also created an atmosphere of darkness and depression which also conveyed the main character and mise en scene used to portray her stress. I also think that the use of lighting focused onto the character which also made it visible to the audience her emotions.

EVALUATION.5

  • The first way we reached out to our audience was by doing a premiere at Screen on the Green cinema
  • We also uploaded the title sequence into vimeo

Evaluation of our film opening: Question 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

A media institution is an established organisation that deals in creation and distribution of advertising and entertainment. The kind of media institution that would distribute our media product would be independent as our film opening showed little use of technology compared to major film companies as major film companies use a range of high tec cameras and equipment to produce their movies. As major film companies such as 20th century fox and sony have an higher budget than independent film companies so they can use a range of different cameras such as simul camera, virtual camera system, 3D fusion camera, virtual images and many more. However independent films such as Paranormal activity 1 was distributed by a film festival called screamfest horror film festival in 2007. This is similar for us as our movie was showed at a movie screening in Angel called 'The screen on Green'. Hoever Paranormal Activity was then distributed by paramount pictures. Paranormal activity 1 was an independent movie as a low budget of $15,000 to create the movie also only one JVC camera was used to create this movie, also unknown actors starred in this movie without a script. Our media product is similar to a independent movie as our camera and editing was showed to be basic.

However we used City and Islington college to show the audience the production company.
Distribution companies: News corporation.

News corporation is an American multi conglomerate headquartered in New york. News corporation own hundreds of media companies such as sky, 21st century fox, fox news, wall street journey, star tv ect. It is the worlds second largest media conglomerate which was created in 1979 which is founded and owned by Rupert Murdouch.

If we was to distribute our film independently there would be many advantages and disadvantages. Advantages would be that the movie would be able to stay in the cinemas longer and possibly able to become a franchise if it became popular. However the disadvantages are it may have a low movie rating which would lead to the movie being unsuccessful is it doesn't get enough views. On the other hand the advantage and disadvantages of being distributed from a major film company are that the advantages are that we could make more movies and the producer would get recognised and people would choose to watch the movie. Disadvantages are if the movie is unsuccessful we would loose out on a lot of money and people may not watch the producers/studios movies if it doesn't meet their standards.

EVALUATION.4

EVALUATION: Question 2

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Representation:

  • Refers to the construction in any medium
  • Includes aspects of reality such as people, writing, objects or events
  • Representations may be in speech or writing
  • Representations refers to the key markets of identity eg. Class, age, gender and ethnicity

In our thriller 'Affliction of Memory' we have gone under the representation of color by using a sepia effect.

We have turned these normal shots into old looking ones which relate to our thriller. Parts which doesn't have a sepia effect is the scenes only by the mother.

Social groups has been defined as two or more people sharing some social relation. These people share some similiar characteristics. These members of people are considered as a unit.
Our group has limited variation in terms of social representation in our film. We only had two social groups, a single mother and a child being represented.

Our first social group, the child was slightly influenced by the girl in the movie 'The orphan'. In Orphan the film is perversed in representing the girl as evil however we wanted ours to be represented as freaky yet innocent. Because she is a dead child we also wanted her to have a hidden identity.

This shot has similarities and differences between them as we wanted our character to be mysterious, freaky yet innocent. Both characters have fixed expressions to show something about the character, what they are hiding and how they are feeling. The shot of the orphan child however has a more stern serious look whereas the shot of the child in our film has a more calmer look and there is a hint of a smile there. With the Orphan child you can get the impression that she is slightly evil but with our child you get a sense of innocence.

These shots have similarities in terms of mise en scene. Both characters are wearing white clothing though our character has blood stain on their outfit. They are both also standing in the same position, behind another individual. The body language of the orphan child shows that she is about to do something evil and the way she is looking at the child sleeping suggests that something she is about to do is not right. our character is standing behind her mother. Her body language is just relaxed and confident as if she wants her mother to turn around to see her. There is no source of evilness through this image. The only difference with these two shots is the setting scene. Our scene is set in the park and both characters are standing beside trees and it is clear the setting scene in the orphan is the bedroom.

In terms of the single mother, our choice of props such as the use of cigarettes and alcohol has portrayed single mothers negatively. It shows the single mother having no control and being vulnerable. We did shots of the single mother smoking, drinking and looking stressed. On a positive side this is something people would see on their screens. I think we represented her in reality of any parent deeply upset over their dead child.
